Magnesium is an element and mineral found throughout nature and one of the body’s electrolytes. In the body, it is the fourth most abundant mineral and is absolutely crucial to many aspects of health.
About 99 percent of your body’s total magnesium is stored in your bones, muscles and soft tissues while only about 1 percent is concentrated in the blood. Low levels of magnesium have been associated with a number of conditions and diseases, including Alzheimer’s,Type 2 diabetes, migraines, hypertension, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and heart disease. (2a)
Magnesium plays a central role in just about every bodily process, from the synthesis of DNA to the metabolism of insulin. Low levels of this crucial mineral have even been tied to an entire laundry list of chronic conditions like Alzheimer’s, diabetes and heart disease.
One of the first studies on transdermal magnesium absorption was published by the naturopathic doctor and founder of the American Holistic Medical Association Norman Shealy, M.D. Ph.D in 2000. He was an early advocate for the particular benefits of transdermal applications of magnesium . Shealy gave evidence that a magnesium deficiency can be compensated by transdermal application within 4 to 6 weeks, whereas an oral supplementation is effective only after 4 to 12 months.
Biologically active sulfur is one of the most critical nutrients for our bodies to remain youthful and energetic. As we age, along with a diet deficient in essential nutrients, our bodies become stiff, our cells become rigid, and our overall energy begins to rapidly decelerate.
It’s a sulfur-containing compound found naturally in plants, animals and humans. It can also be produced in a lab to create dietary supplements in powder or capsule form.
MSM is widely used in the alternative medicine field and by people looking for a natural way to relieve joint pain, reduce inflammation and boost immunity.
It has been shown to benefit those with joint degeneration, a common cause of pain in the knees, back, hands and hips.
Joint degeneration can negatively impact your quality of life by limiting your movement and mobility.
Studies have shown that MSM significantly reduce inflammation in your body. It also inhibits the breakdown of cartilage, a flexible tissue that protects the ends of your bones in joints (1).
A study in 100 people over the age of 50 found that treatment with a supplement containing 1,200 mg of MSM for 12 weeks decreased pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints, compared to a placebo (2).
Copaiba is highly regarded for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its unique composition makes it an excellent natural remedy for pain and inflammation. It can even be safely ingested to treat health disorders, which is rare for essential oils.
Copaiba comes from the resin of the copaiba balsam tree. For several centuries, copaiba oil has been known for its anti-inflammatory properties. In Brazil, it is also widely used as an antiseptic. Beta-caryophyllene is the main compound in the oil that’s responsible for providing this effect. A study published in The Journal of Ethnopharmacology showed that this compound also has pain-killing properties.
Many consider copaiba oil as the most powerful anti-inflammatory agent in the world. This has helped the essential oil communities across the globe to become more aware of copaiba. And thanks to more studies involving the essential oil, its healing properties have been established. For instance, one study showed that users of copaiba oil experienced a significant improvement in the inflammatory response. It has also been shown to block the detection of injurious stimuli, which means it can serve as an effective natural pain reliever.
Arnica oil has become popular for its pain-relieving and health-promoting properties.
Arnica flowers and roots have been used for hundreds of years as an herbal medicine. The majority of Arnica oil's anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties are attributed to its thymol derivatives. Thymol has been found to be effective as a vasodilator of subcutaneous blood capillaries, which helps facilitate the transport of blood and fluid accumulations and acts as an anti-inflammatory to assist normal healing processes.
Arnica oil also aids in stimulating the flow of white blood cells, which process congested blood to help disperse trapped fluid from the joints, muscles and bruised tissue.
The most known therapeutic benefit of Wintergreen oil are its analgesic properites, which can help alleviate headache, muscle cramps, joint pain, tendonitis and bone pain.
Rosemary essential oil is promoted for its ability to relieve pain, which is why it's widely used in treating headaches, muscle pains, and even arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory qualities make it a good way to address pain from sprains and joint aches.
A component of Ginger essential oil, called zingibain, is responsible for the oil’s anti-inflammatory properties. This important component provides pain relief and treats muscle aches, arthritis, migraines and works as a headache remedy. Ginger essential oil is believed to reduce the amount of prostaglandins in the body, which are compounds associated with pain. (6)
Tumeric Essential Oil
One of the major active compounds in turmeric is curcumin, a super-powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
A 2008 study concluded that, "Curcumin has been used extensively in ayurvedic medicine for centuries, as it is nontoxic and has a variety of therapeutic properties including antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic activity, and anticarcinogenic activity."
Extracted from the roots, also called rhizomes, via the process of steam distillation, turmeric essential oil is a lot more concentrated than the powdered form. The aroma of turmeric oil is also very much like the fresh cut root - woody and earthy with a touch of spice. And just like the powder, the oil is also packed with antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-worm, anti-allergic, and anti-parasitic healing properties.
Hemp seed oil comes from the small seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. The seeds do not contain the same levels of compounds as the plant itself, but they still have a rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids, and useful bioactive compounds. Research has found that hemp contains all of the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids that are necessary for human life. It also contains a unique protein called globule edestin which is similar to globulin in human blood plasma. Hemp seed oil possesses powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The GLA content or Gamma Linoleic Acid aids in prevention of inflammation. This is an omega-6 fat that encourages immunity. It works by boosting the production of prostaglandins, a hormone to control inflammation. It can help treat the painful inflammation of arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions.
